ISABELLA D’ESTE, Markgräfin von Mantua (1474-1539), war eine faszinierende Frau der Renaissance. Hoch gebildet und künstlerisch interessiert, international bestens vernetzt und der hohen Kunst der Diplomatie kundig, galt sie unter ihren Zeitgenossen als die Prima Donna del Mondo, als die Dame von Welt schlechthin.

Sie trat selbst als Musikerin wie auch als große Mäzenin auf und versammelte an ihrem Hof die berühmtesten Musiker und Komponisten wie Serafino Ciminelli dell’Aquila, Niccolò da Correggio, Bartolomeo Tromboncino und Marchetto Cara.

Populär in der Hofmusik Oberitaliens war die Gattung der Frottole, bei der es sich im 15. Jahrhundert zunächst um eine mündliche Praxis gehandelt hatte, die nur vereinzelt dokumentiert ist und entwickelte sich bald zu einer kompositorischen Gattung.
