Wer kennt den Song der britischen Rock-Band The Stranglers nicht, der das Leben hinterfragt und im Refrain there’s always the sun Hoffnung versprüht? Zu aller Zeit ist die Musik zum Sprachrohr und zum Seelentröster der Menschen geworden. Im Mittelalter galten die Heiligen und die Märtyrer als Vermittler zwischen Gott und Mensch und Ansprechpartner für alle Sorgen. Dabei nimmt die Gottesmutter Maria als Schutzpatronin den höchsten Platz ein. Ihr sind unzählige Lieder gewidmet, die die Wünsche und Bitten der Menschen in sich tragen. Pilgerstätten galten als Brücken zwischen Himmel und Erde.
Mit dem lateinischen Lied “Veri solis radius et sol pleni luminis-”/ein wahrer Sonnenstrahl und die Sonne ist voller Licht aus Saint Martial de Limoges, 12. Jahrhundert, eröffnen wir ein Konzert voller Emotionen. Auf dem Programm stehen geistliche und weltliche Lieder aus Codices verschiedener Kulturkreise des Mittelalters, die sich mit ihrer Trauer und Freude, Hoffnung und Sehnsucht an Heilige und Märtyrer, aber auch an einen Geliebten in der Ferne richten.
Tears of Sorrow and Joy
Who doesn't know the song by the British rock band The Stranglers, that deals with eternal questions of life? Aren’t we always looking for someone we can confide in? To reveal ourselvers, to find comfort, and to share joy? Throughout history, music has served as a voice and comforter for people. In the Middle Ages, saints and martyrs were considered mediators between God and humanity, and people to whom all worries could be addressed. Countless songs are dedicated to them, embodying people's desires and prayers. Pilgrimage sites were considered bridges between heaven and earth. But also otherwise medieval love songs also help those who are head over heels in love to survive.
We open our concert with the Latin hymn "Veri solis radius et sol pleni luminis" (A true ray of sunshine and the sun is full of light) from Saint-Martial de Limoges, 12th century. The program includes songs from codices of various medieval cultures, which address saints and martyrs, as well as a distant lover, with full longing and passion. These express deep feelings of sadness and joy, hope, and even contemplation.
The repertoire includes pilgrim songs from various famous manuscripts from the Middle Ages as the Laudario di Cortona, Codex Las Huelgas, the Cyprus Codex and Cantigas de Amigo, old Galician-Portuguese women’s songs also tell us from the torments of love, the waves of the sea and the absence for the belover.
